#FineArtFriday – Anniversary of Marilyn Monroe, by Douglas Kirkland

On the evening of 17th November 1961, Toronto born photographer Douglas Kirkland began a photo shoot that would go down in history as one of the most iconic sessions with Marilyn Monroe. Kirkland, then aged 24, photographed Marilyn Monroe in a closed studio for his first assignment with Look Magazine.

The Hollywood icon was two hours late to the set, but her manager just shrugged and noted ‘she’s always late, but she always shows up.’   When Marilyn did show-up, Kirkland proceeded to take a series of photos of the superstar that would help launch his career as one of the greatest Hollywood and fashion photographers of the 20th century and someone who continues to work to this day.
