I was lucky enough to receive the call to come to the Marquee to photograph David Bowie. And I was smart enough to know to say yes.
If I had to name the most talented, enigmatic, and audacious star I ever photographed, it would have to be him
” – Terry O’Neill

When David Bowie played The Marquee Club in October 1973, most of those who attended the gig at this famed small venue did not realise that this would be the last performance Bowie would ever give as Ziggy Stardust, a character he seemingly put to rest several months before at a performance at the Hammersmith Odeon. But when Bowie agreed to perform at the Soho club for an American television special, he went on-stage briefly as Ziggy one last time.

Terry O’Neill, already a noted photographer known for his work with The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and a host of other famed musicians, was there to play witness to this astonishing moment in music history.  Filming for the program ‘Midnight Special’, Bowie gathered friends and to participate; either on-stage, backstage or as audience members.

Award-winning writer Daniel Rachel has gathered together a wonderful collection first-hand memories from the event.  First person stories from Terry O’Neill, presenter Amanda Lear, singers Ava Cherry and Geoff MacCormack, sound engineer Ken Scott, stylist Suzi Ronson, punk icon Jayne County along with several fans who were in the audience combined with images from O’Neill from that incredible day, all make up this wonderful new book.

This month Iconic Images are away a signed copy of ‘When Ziggy Played the Marquee’.  The winner will be picked at random on 1st September, just sign up to our mailing list for a chance to win!
