FINE ART : Prince View 2, by Steve Parke
Steve Parke is an award-winning illustrator, designer, and photographer. He worked for Prince for 13 years as his in-house art director at Paisley Park—doing everything from designing album covers and hand painting guitars to enlisting every spare pair of hands to melt candles for an impromptu music video. His book “Picturing Prince” was published last year to wide acclaim (“If you only own one book about Prince, let it be PICTURING PRINCE -Alan Leeds)
These two images from Steve’s archive highlight Prince’s love of basketball. A keen player as a kid, Prince regularly attended and watched games and was well-known to play himself. “It is true” Steve Parke remembers, “I took these shots at the basketball court Prince set-up inside Paisley Park.
“I watched him play with a crew of guys he grew up with and in that moment I realized he would be great at ANYTHING he put his mind to; he seemed to defy the laws of physics whether shooting a ball or jumping on a piano in five inch heels. He was the very definition of an athlete.”
